Paperless Tickets A Headache When Miley Cyrus Reschedules

Miley Cyrus fans in Kansas City are finding out what it's like to be on entertainment's cutting edge.

Her tour went to paperless tickets to help cut back on scalpers buying blocks of seats to her popular concerts and shutting out average fans.
But what happens when Miley gets sick, cancels her Oct. 3 concert at the Sprint Center and reschedules for Oct. 17?

Some fans are finding out.

Those who can't make the new date won't be able to just hand the tickets off or sell them to a friend. Paperless tickets mean the original buyer has to show up in person, credit card and government-issued ID in hand.
"We realize the process is different than normal," said Shani Tate, Sprint spokeswoman.
The Sprint Center can't promise to fix every ticket holder's problem, but venue officials say they will try.
The teen sensation's concert tour is groundbreaking in several ways.
It's Sprint Center's first completely paperless concert, and two of Miley's dates may be the first completely paperless concert to get rescheduled, first in Omaha then in Kansas City.
And then there are the crying tweens.
Last week Sprint Center got calls from several of them who panicked when they mistakenly heard the concert had been canceled altogether, Tate said.
“Many fans are very emotional and have a great passion for the artist,” she said.
So what if Mom bought the tickets but has to attend a wedding the night of the 17th? Or what if Dad has to be out of town on business?

A few choices:

•People who want refunds for their tickets can obtain them where they bought them — either in person at the Sprint Center box office or through Ticketmaster. The deadline is Friday.
•Ticket purchasers can show up at Sprint the night of the concert long enough to swipe their credit card and let the rest of their party in, then leave.
•Or they can try to find a way to hand off the tickets without being there that night. And that’s where it gets complicated.

Those people should call the Sprint Center box office as soon as possible, Tate said.

Paperless ticket rules still apply and there’s no blanket policy for dealing with extenuating situations, she said,“we’ll do our best to work through every individual circumstance.”
Tate said Tuesday that the Sprint Center box office had received a trickle of calls regarding the upcoming concert.
She said they were able to resolve problems for most of the people who have called in with extenuating circumstances so far.
If all else fails, an adult who can’t use his tickets but wants the kids to go can request refunds for the block of seats, then have another adult who can go buy new ones. However, there’s no guarantee they can get the same seats.
This year’s concert wasn’t sold out last week when Miley became ill and announced she had to reschedule, Tate said.

And — as of Tuesday night — it still wasn’t.
To handle potential glitches on show day, the Sprint Center box office will open at 10 a.m., Tate said.
That night, the box office will be fully staffed, and there will be a help desk plus extra Ticketmaster representatives on hand.

Doors to the 7 p.m. concert will open at 5 p.m.

The Sprint Center on Tuesday announced a bright spot for Miley-lovers who, for whatever reason, can’t see her in person.
Miley merchandise — normally only available inside the concert venue — will be for sale outside the Sprint Center that night.
Miley’s Oct. 2 concert was rescheduled in Omaha, where the Qwest Center is referring fans to Ticketmaster and girding for Tuesday, the night of the concert.
“It’s a new process so the intent is to be as customer-friendly as we possibly can,” Qwest Center spokesman Doug Parrott said. “We’re going to look at every one of them on a case by case basis.”
Miley’s 2007 Kansas City concert sold out within minutes, and angry moms complained all the way up to the City Council.
While paperless tickets were billed as a way to block third-party vendors from gobbling up all the popular star’s tickets and reselling them at inflated prices, it’s still going on to some extent.
Through Ticketmaster, the most expensive seat to see Miley at the Sprint Center was $79.50.
A check on Tuesday revealed several brokers offering tickets, some up to $1,413 apiece. They came with a promise that a representative would meet the buyer at the venue to swipe the matching credit card and let them in.
Tate said she’d seen online brokers asking as much as $2,600 for Miley tickets, both in 2007 and for this year’s show.
On Tuesday, hours before a Michigan concert that was her first since her illness, the teen queen reported on Twitter that she was better and ready to rock.

“McDonald’s burgers are glorious! Sooo good! I just ate a burger, fries, and an ice cream cone. Getting pumped for the show!!! :)))”
