Can Miley Cyrus Save Health Care Reform?

The pop starlet's new single is great, goofy—and bipartisan!—fun.

At 16, Miley Cyrus is an actress, singer, memoirist, clothing designer, cancer-research advocate, highly ranked member of Forbes' "Superstar Earners Under 25" list, and the subject of a magazine-cover mini-scandal, twice over. Recently, she enjoyed a new career milestone when her song "Party in the USA"—released to promote not an album but a Wal-Mart-exclusive clothing line—became her highest-charting single ever, debuting at No. 2 on Billboard's Hot 100.

For a 21st-century multitasker like Cyrus, chart performance may seem like a quaint, outmoded measure of success—surely it's a more robust vital sign that all three colorways of her chiffon ruffle blouse have sold out at the Wal-Mart site. But the charts likely mean a lot to a girl who got famous by impersonating a stadium-packing starlet (on the Disney series Hannah Montana), whose father is a musician, too (Billy Ray), and who spent the video for her second-biggest single schlepping around a guitar case (the go-to talisman for pop moppets seeking an aura of musical credibility).

Who needs credibility, though, when you've got a song like "Party in the USA" on your hands? It's the best song of her career and the first that truly deserves its ubiquity.

At the center of the song's appeal is Cyrus' conciliatory streak. Her C.V. is full of jobs, but the one she seems to relish most is that of peace broker: She loves trying to get seemingly irreconcilable forces to hug, or at least sit together at the same lunch table.

This is Hannah Montana's underlying conceit. On the show, the irreconcilable forces in question are the contradictory demands of the public and private spheres, which coexist within a single, industrious girl: Cyrus plays a world-famous pop star who attempts to carve out a secret life as a regular Malibu, Calif., student. In Hannah Montana: The Movie, the tension between fame and privacy is echoed, geographically, in a story line that divides Hannah's time between glitzy, fast-paced Los Angeles and her modest hometown, Crowley Corners, Tenn. (Cyrus herself was born in Nashville.) The tension is ultimately resolved when Hannah throws a special benefit concert that simultaneously saves the town from encroaching developers and offers her a renewed, down-home sense of purpose.

Cyrus's mediating tendencies are on proud display in her music, too. Her single "7 Things" begins as a cathartic kiss-off to some no-good boy, listing six obnoxious traits before the big reveal—"the seventh thing I hate the most that you do: You make me love you." To those of us wishing for a righteous slab of Disney-issue girl power, this payoff is a bit dispiriting, but it's of a piece with Miley's yin-yang philosophy: "You make me laugh, you make me cry," she sings, "but I guess that's both I'll have to buy." On "Hoedown Throwdown," one of the weirdest singles to ever crack the upper reaches of the pop charts, the disparate forces drawn together are hip-hop and country music. Like "The Macarena" and "The Locomotion," "Hoedown Throwdown" is a singalong instruction manual for a new dance step. There are fiddles and banjos, a bleacher-stomping beat, and the sort of awkward, vaguely "urban" slang you typically hear thudding from the mouths of European VJs and young black people in McDonald's radio ads. "Pop it, lock it, polka-dot it," Cyrus raps on the refrain, "countrify then hip-hop it." The song is a goofy mashup of cultural signifiers at their most superficial—a train wreck in the name of brotherhood.

"Party in the USA" is something like the culmination of these earlier efforts, bigger and better. Backed by a sun-mellowed funk riff and strafed with chunky, zipping synthesizers on the chorus, Cyrus tells the apparently autobiographical story of her first trip to Los Angeles. It's a classic fish-out-of-water tale, narrated by a Dixie girl "with a dream and my cardigan." (Dispatch a Ron Herman personal shopper—everyone knows knitwear is banned west of Pasadena!) Cowed, her eyes are wide, but not so wide that she can't roll them a bit at big-city pretenses: "It's definitely not a Nashville party," she sings, " 'Cause all I see are stilettos—I guess I never got the memo!"

At the end of each verse, Cyrus hears one of her favorite songs—Jay-Z comes on the radio in the first verse, a club DJ spins Britney Spears in the second—and suddenly she's able to dance away her jitters: "So I put my hands up, they're playing my song, I know I'm gonna be OK/ Yeah-eah-eeah, it's a party in the USA."* It's a bighearted, triumphant moment, tapping the grinningly goofy populism of "Hoedown Throwdown" and mercifully jettisoning everything else. The song gives a better window into Miley Cyrus' head—and does so more entertainingly—than any other song she's released. Some credit on this score surely belongs to the song's producer and co-writer, Lukasz Gottwald, a Swede who excels at translating the sass and anxieties of American teenage girls—with a beguiling dash of Babelfish-esque stiltedness—into Top 40 gold.

The title "Party in the USA" makes explicit what the lyrics' Nashville-to-L.A. pilgrimage and Jay-Z and Britney name-drops suggest—this isn't a mere single so much as a red state/blue state, hick/elite, rural/urban dĂ©tente. Pop bliss eradicates regionalism. (This point is built ingeniously into the music, too—when Cyrus repeats the words "and a Jay-Z song was on," it's hard to say whether her mildly robotic vibrato is nodding to country music, T-Pain, or both.)

"Party in the USA" pairs a familiar notion—music brings us together—with a more timely concern. After a summer in which anti-Obama crazies brought guns to town hall meetings and anti-government crazies may have lynched a census worker, in which calls from the left for the president to abandon bipartisanship intensified to a roar, Miley Cyrus has decided on her most ambitious arbitration yet: She wants to heal a fractured nation, at least for three and a half minutes.

Does Miley Cyrus Have Staying Power?

At 17 does Miley Cyrus having staying power? It appears so.

NEW YORK (AP) - Does Miley Cyrus have staying power? At least some of her fans think so, for what it's worth.

Vanity Fair and the TV show "60 Minutes" did a survey in which people were asked which famous person, living or dead, would still be able to sell products 100 years from now.

Cyrus finished third among the top five on the list, with 10 percent of those responding thinking they'd be buying stuff with her face plastered on it a century later.

Number one on the list -- Albert Einstein, followed by Michael Jackson, then comes Cyrus, followed by James Dean and Madonna.

CONFIRMED: Miley will be in Sex And The City 2

For weeks rumors have swirled that Miley Cyrus will have a role in “Sex and the City 2.”

It's confirmed now that in the current script, Cyrus has one scene, and in it she wears the same dress to a red carpet event that Kim Cattrall’s character buys to look “hot and young.” In the script, Mario Cantone’s character Anthony responds by exclaiming, “Mother of God: She is wearing the same dress as Hannah Montana.”

As of now the script doesn’t call for Cyrus to have any speaking lines.

Initially, it was told Cyrus wouldn’t be in the film because of her busy touring schedule, but now sources involved in the production tell us both sides are arranging so that it can happen.

Miley Cyrus 'Party In The U.S.A.' Clip Inspired By 'Grease'

In addition to 'one of her favorite movies,' the video also pays tribute to the singer's parents, director Chris Applebaum says.

Miley Cyrus made her intentions known when it came to the concept for her "Party in the U.S.A." video: According to the director, her idea was all about "high-gloss, glamorous white trash." For the clip, Cyrus wanted to pay tribute to her parents' courting days as well as her favorite movie, "Grease."

"Miley did have an idea — one of her favorite movies is 'Grease,' " director Chris Applebaum told MTV News. "Everything kind of sprang forward from that scene in 'Grease' where John Travolta is singing ... and he gets out of the car and goes to jungle gym and sits in one of the swings and sings the song at night as projections go in the background — she came to me [with that]."

In addition to the "Grease" tribute, Miley wanted to remember another time before she was born — a time when her parents were still dating.

"Interesting enough, Miley's parents Tish and Billy Ray, when they were first dating they went to a drive-in in Kentucky, I think, called the Corral Drive-In — so we named the drive-in after that as an homage to them," Applebaum explained. "In addition, Miley's mom Tish used to drive '79 black Pontiac Trans Am, 'Smokey and the Bandit' style, and obviously that's the car that Miley arrives in."

Applebaum raved about Cyrus, insisting she isn't just a cookie-cutter pop star — she's the real deal. "I really like her a lot and I've worked with pretty much every female pop star. ... She's fun and she's personal and she's smart in a way that you'd want one of your best buddies to be," he explained. "She's more like a guy than a girl. She doesn't take herself too seriously. She's a real artist, she comes from that background. She's just a hard worker."

He notes that Cyrus is such a tomboy that if she were placed in a room with some of the biggest stars today, male and female, you'd see Cyrus hanging out with the boys. "Say there was a celebrity star-studded event and people at the party — Britney's there, Rihanna's there, BeyoncĂ©'s there, but also, like, Jay-Z is there and Kid Rock is there. I could easily see a scene where you walk into a room and you see Kid Rock and Jay-Z standing next to each other laughing hysterically, and as you get closer you realize they're standing around Miley, who is telling them stories and cracking jokes."

Miley Cyrus Wants A Little Respect

For one of the most famous girls in the world, making the smallest mistake becomes breaking news. In an interview with the AP, teen queen Miley Cyrus admitted that she's made her fair share of missteps, but wishes the public would have a little more respect for her privacy.

"I think everything I do is exaggerated a lot," 16-year-old Miley said. "I think that no matter what, I think it is all about respect. People forget that when you are in the public eye, people forget you still have to respect people and you still have to (respect) their privacy."

Much of the criticism over Miley's choices is directed at her parents, especially dad Billy Ray Cyrus. Miley would like people to "trust the fact that my parents are raising me just like everyone else is raising their kids," she said. "They are doing it the way they want to. It is not for the media or for any one else to judge how they should or should not raise me."

Miley also opened up about her departure from 'Hannah Montana.' Her upcoming tour is missing the blond alter-ego, and in the film 'The Last Song' Miley plays a rebellious teen who, except for a love of music, has little in common with wholesome Hannah.

"I love doing 'Hannah Montana,' but I want to continue doing things that are a little bit more darker roles," she said. "That is kind of who I am and where I find most of my inspiration in movies like that."

Of the rumors that she may retire the 'Hannah Montana' character altogether, Miley joked, "I thought about retiring when I was like 15. Just kidding. I would have retired like twelve years ago."

At this point there are no plans to retire Hannah. Not as long as Miley's having fun. "My dad always says, 'If you ain't having fun, it ain't working.' And so when I stop having fun, I'll just quit everything altogether," she said. "But, I'm having fun. ... I think I will forever do that, if I have the people that I'm around still around me. They make me happy, and the people that I work with I really love. ... I will be able to tour the rest of my life if I am having fun."

Miley Cyrus Talks Tour,Growing Up And Twitter Feedback

LOS ANGELES (AP) Miley Cyrus doesn't need to look at the music charts to know that her songs are making a connection with the fans - all she has to do is update her Twitter page.

"I'm stoked that people have been so supportive," she says of her latest project, the EP "The Time of Our Lives". "On my Twitter, (I get) so many replies like 'This song inspires me' and 'This inspires me.' ... One of the reasons why I love that site is being able to see what people are saying about the record."

Of course, having a best-selling record is good reassurance too - and Miley getting plenty of it these days. The EP is near the top of the charts and her song "The Climb" has been No. 1 on Billboard's adult contemporary chart for weeks.

It's just another example of the maturing career of the 16-year-old Miley. While she's still known to millions as the star of the Disney phenomenon "Hannah Montana," she's not just a teen queen anymore. VH1 crowned her as one of their "Divas," she's in an upcoming movie playing a defiant teen and she's calling the shots on her "Wonder World" tour.

Miley recently talked to The Associated Press about her new show, growing up and what being a diva means to her.

AP: Describe the new album "The Time of Our Lives."

Miley: It is a transitioning album. ... Everything is like a stepping stone. And that was really to introduce people to what I want my next record to sound like and with time I will be able to do that a little more and timing is just everything. So it is really about us working our way up to being able to do the music you really love.

AP: A lot of your music you write yourself. Do you ever write a song and go, "Oh my God, wait, that is too personal, I don't want to put that out?"

Miley: Yes, sometimes I write songs just to write them. I have written thousands of songs that are just for me. I will even play them for my friends, and they will say, 'Will that be on your next record?" and I'll say, "No, that was just for me. That was just for my peace of mind." And I think that is important to do that. Not always writing a song and be like, "Oh, that is going to be on a record." If it sounds great and it is something that you think goes along with the album that you are putting together, that is awesome. If not then it's cool. It doesn't matter."

AP: What would you say is the most diva like thing about you?

Miley: This tour is the most diva thing. Because when I got here, it was like, "OK, we are not messing around, this thing is going to be like full out. We are going to get everything, it's going to continue to blow peoples minds." And everyone was like, "Alright Miley is stepping it up." And I was like, "Yeah, it is my tour." The first time I was actually going out, no "Hannah Montana," none of that. Just my own style.

AP: You are going to be in the film "The Last Song," out next spring. Is it a departure from your "Hannah" character?

Miley: I really do get to do a little bit of everything. It is not like getting away from it at all, it is just showing more of a side that I want to show. I love doing "Hannah Montana," but I want to continue doing things that are a little bit more darker roles. That is kind of who I am and where I find most of my inspiration in movies like that.

AP: Now that you are getting older, there is more talk of you possibly retiring the "Hannah Montana" character.

Miley: I thought about retiring when I was like 15. Just kidding. I would have retired like twelve years ago.

AP: When that day does come, obviously it will be very sad, but will it also a little bit of a relief?

Miley: I want to continue to do everything I can. My dad always says, "If you ain't having fun, it ain't working." And so when I stop having fun, I'll just quit everything altogether. But, I'm having fun. ... I think I will forever do that, if I have the people that I'm around still around me. They make me happy, and the people that I work with I really love. ... I will be able to tour the rest of my life if I am having fun. AP: You have mentioned that you have made a few mistakes. What would you say was your biggest and what was the most exaggerated one?

Miley: I think everything I do is exaggerated a lot. I think that no matter what, I think it is all about respect. People forget that when you are in the public eye, people forget you still have to respect people and you still have to (respect) their privacy. And also respect my family and trust the fact that my parents are raising me just like everyone else is raising their kids. They are doing it the way they want to. It is not for the media or for any one else to judge how they should or should not raise me.

Miley Cyrus' 'Party In The U.S.A.' Video Trades Trailer Park For Drive-In

New clip plays off Miley's Nashville roots and pop sound.

Miley Cyrus debuted the music video for her single, "Party in the U.S.A." on Wednesday night (September 23). A 90-second snippet played during "Dancing with the Stars," and the full video is streaming on ABCmusiclounge.com for a 48-hour period.

The video is reminiscent of Cyrus' performance of the track on the Teen Choice Awards over the summer — minus the pole dancing. The clip, directed by Chris Applebaum, has Cyrus rocking short shorts, a black tank top, cowboy boots and a vest. Much of the video takes place in an abandoned drive-in movie theater and features dancers partying to Cyrus' track on vintage cars and pickup trucks, mixing the song's pop sound with visuals that reference her Tennessee roots, which is what she has said the song is about.

"'Party in the U.S.A.' is an all-American song, and so I come out tonight and I'm literally in a trailer park. It's a blinged-out trailer park," she explained to MTV News before her Teen Choice performance. "I'm like, 'This is to represent where I am from.' I'm so proud of it. All the girls trying to be Hollywood and stuff with their big glasses, me shooing them away. I love it. It's about my roots."

The track, produced by hitmaker Dr. Luke, is featured on Cyrus' hit EP Time of Our Lives. Cyrus is on her Wonder World tour, and it was just recently announced that her next movie, "The Last Song," was pushed back from January to April.

Miley Cyrus To Preview 'Party In The U.S.A.' Clip On 'Dancing With The Stars'

Miley Cyrus gave fans their first taste of "Party in the U.S.A." over the summer at the Teen Choice Awards, and now the singer/actress will offer a sneak peek of the song's video Wednesday on "Dancing With the Stars."

In a message on her Facebook page, the singer told fans, "Breaking news! A sneak peek at the world premiere of Miley's new music video for 'Party in the U.S.A.' will be airing this week during the live 3-night 'Dancing With the Stars' premiere! ... More details to come."

MTV News has confirmed the details of the sneak peek, which, according to Cyrus' reps, will be an exclusive 90-second version of the video airing during the show Wednesday. The full-length video will be available online??.

Miley Can Say What She Wants

So what if Miley Cyrus is only 16? She says she’s found her voice as a musician and it shows on her new EP, The Times of Our Lives. “I think I’ve been able to give myself more say. I think at first I was a little more afraid of what I could and what I could not say,” the singer and actress told the Associated Press prior to her performance at the VH1 Divas concert last night in NYC.
Not only has Miley grown as a musician, she says she’s grown as a woman as well.

“I think about it any time I write a song. I’m like, “Why can’t I say that? Why can’t you say what you feel?” asks Miley. “There shouldn’t be an age or a certain kind of cookie-cutter way of doing things. You can say what you want to. It’s about being an artist. That’s what an artist is.”

Miley Cyrus Duetting With Sheryl Crow On VH1 Divas Concert?

Who will be joining forces with whom on upcoming VH1 Divas Concert has been revealed. Miley Cyrus is set to collaborate with Sheryl Crow, Adele is scheduled to share stage with India.Arie, and Jennifer Hudson will team up with Stevie Wonder.

Furthermore, it is announced that Jordin Sparks will make a duet with Martina McBride, Kelly Clarkson will perform alongside Melissa Etheridge, and Leona Lewis is staged to take the mic with Cyndi Lauper. In addition to newly-announced duets, the headliners will also showcase their singing talent on individual set.

Since being absent from the small screen in 2004, VH1 Divas Concert will make a return on September 17 at the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) Howard Gilman Opera House in Brooklyn, New York. The gig will be hosted by the former judge of "American Idol", Paula Abdul.

A number of celebrities are confirmed to come to the concert as presenters. They are Kathie Lee Gifford, Hoda Kotb, Kathy Griffin, Toni Braxton, Ryan Kwanten, Lauren Conrad, Whitney Port, "Fame" cast (Asher Book, Anna Maria Perez de Tagle, Kherington Payne, Naturi Naughton and Walter Perez) as well as "Real Housewives" stars, which include Bethenny Frankel, Kim Zolciak and Nene Leakes.

Just like in the previous years, this revived VH1 Divas concert will raise funds for the VH1 Save The Music Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to restoring instrumental music education in American public schools, and raising awareness about the importance of music as part of each child's complete education.

Miley Cyrus gets Sheryl Crow as her duet partner, Jennifer Hudson has Stevie Wonder as her collaborator, while Leona Lewis will take the stage with Cyndi Lauper.

Will Miley Cyrus Be Joined By The Jonas Brothers On Tour?

On Miley Cyrus' Wonder World Tour the singer has props like tractors, boats and motorcycles, but everyone wants to know: Will the Jonas Brothers be joining the show?

"I don't know," she told MTV News. "I went and saw the Jonas' show and it was cool being able to go to a Jonas Brothers' concert. It was super fun." But she noted that if the boys do make an appearance, it'll be as audience members — her tour doesn't allow for special appearances like the one she made at their show in June in Dallas.

"We don't have time for any guest appearances or anything," she added. "I think a lot of my friends will be able to come and visit. You know, the problem is a lot of my buddies are busy working too, but I hope they all can at least catch a show. That'd be really great. It was cool to be able to see the [Jonas Brothers'] show and I hope they'll be able to come here."

And just in case her friends think they have seen it all before, Cyrus promises that this tour will be a lot different than her Best of Both Worlds trek and that her look — which includes a costume change that has her donning a bejeweled bodysuit — will be "pretty wild." "It's something that I couldn't do for a while," she explained about the show, which kicked off September 14 in Portland. "It's definitely more mature. It's super fun. It's kind of for everybody."

Miley Cyrus Goes Paperless For All Tickets On 45-city Tour Plus Tour Kicks Off Today!

When Miley Cyrus hit the road two years ago, many of her young fans' parents were outraged that they couldn't get tickets without paying exorbitant prices to scalpers or resellers. Cyrus hopes to fight that inflation this time around by going paperless with her 45-city Wonder World tour that kicks off tonight in Portland, Ore.
The paperless tickets, which are purchased online through Ticketmaster, require the buyer to provide ID at the venue and swipe the same credit card for entry. The method has been tried out by other tours in recent months, but hers is the first arena tour to admit all concert-goers using the system.

Cyrus' 2007-08 Best of Both Worlds tour grossed $55 million and sold 1 million tickets, according to Billboard Boxscore.

"Miley's (management) thought it was a great way for real Miley fans to get original tickets and pay face value," says David Butler, president of Ticketmaster North America. "That's something she wanted to do for her fans to keep the price reasonable," in the $40 to $80 range.

Ticketmaster started offering the service about four years ago to sports teams. Acts such as AC/DC and Bruce Springsteen have used it recently for high-end seating. In all, Butler says more than 300,000 paperless tickets have been sold this year.

"We started it as a convenience for the fans, similar to the model the airlines follow," Butler says.

It has worked so well at Verizon Arena in North Little Rock that the venue had the equipment permanently installed. "We've done eight or nine concerts," including Brad Paisley and Kenny Chesney, says general manager Michael Marion, who says response has been largely positive. "We've used it only for the prime seats, but it works well."

Gary Bongiovanni, editor of the concert trade publication Pollstar, says it remains to be seen how fans will react as the practice becomes widespread. He says paperless doesn't allow tickets to be sold or transferred, which is a problem for people who need to unload them at the last minute, or must take their kids to the show to get them in.

"There are some less-than-friendly customer aspects to it, and there (could) be some blow-back from that," he says.

And there's anecdotal evidence that resellers aren't being frozen out entirely.

"I've heard stories of ticket brokers throwing (pre-show) parties, then walking everybody to the arena and getting them in with the credit card they used," Bongiovanni says. "If there's a way to game the system, the brokers are going to find it."
