Miley says her relationship is a huge inspiration for her songs.
Miley Cyrus has turned a page as a recording artist with new album Can't Be Tamed, but while she takes the plaudits for her “mature” new sound, she admits boyfriend Liam Hemsworth was a huge inspiration behind many of the tracks.
In an exclusive interview with MSN Starlounge, 17-year-old Miley reveals her relationship with hunky Australian actor Liam - who she met on the set of new movie The Last Song - helped her enormously during the writing process.
“There are a lot of songs on there about Liam,” she says. “He's stoked that some of the songs are about him. He doesn't get writers credit but he should, because he was such an inspiration behind it.”
“It's a little different,” she reflects. “But I'm really happy to be able to move on to a new sound. I'm still the same girl - just a little bit different.”
And Miley admits her new album has allowed her to finally close the book on Hannah Montana, a character she eventually grew out of.
“It was harder and harder to play that role, because I was playing for people who were younger than me,” she says. “It was a little immature because that's the way it has to be, but it was an amazing character and I'm happy that the new episodes will come out for the fans and I've got this new album for older fans who can relate to me.”
With a raunchy new look and some eye catching onstage antics, the comparisons with contemporary artists such as Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera are inevitable, but Miley says the association is an 'honor' - despite the negative press Britney in particular has generated.
“You can look at the negative part of what it is, you know, 'They've done this and they've done this,' but when you look at the numbers that shows how many records they've sold…when you look at the real facts and not people's opinions, it's a real honor.”
Outside of music, Miley is busy developing a film career, with a range of projects currently in the pipeline - including LOL: Laughing Out Loud, a high school romance in which she stars alongside Demi Moore.
However, her biggest acting inspiration is none other than Sex and the City star Sarah Jessica Parker.
“I love Sarah,” she admits. “She treats everyone with such kindness, and even on this upcoming movie she called because I was upset when I couldn't use my own hair and make-up people.
“She was like, 'I know how stressed you must feel and I know people who can help.' It was really sweet, and was so not girly or catty - she just wanted to make sure I was comfortable.”
And having recently made a cameo appearance in Sex and the City 2, Miley says she would definitely consider a role in the rumored prequel.
“If the script was right then sure,” she says. “And if it could be as amazing as the one that's currently out.”
Having graced TV screens and magazine covers across the globe for the last five years Miley hopes her success will continue well into the next decade.
“I just wanna continue to do what I do and love every day of it,” she reveals. “My dad says 'if you do what you love you'll never work a day in your life,' so I hope that'll come true.
“I hope I'll live that life.”
